Liberty Canyon

by Nancy Beverly

The wildflowers were still here! Co-leader Gina and I scouted the Liberty Canyon to Malibu Creek State Park hike several weeks before the GLS official event… and we got quite an eyeful of California poppies and lupine on our expedition. Between then and the scheduled hike on April 19, SoCal had both rain and broiling heat… what would be the flowers’ fate?!

Alas, the poppies were 99% gone (we saw one handful) BUT we were visually treated to Chinese Pagodas, blue dicks, and tons of wild mustard, sage, sagebrush and caterpillar phacelia.

Ten hikers joined us on this glorious spring day filled with not just flowers but sun-capped vast grassy vistas (and, um, a lot of poison oak which we judiciously tip-toed around).
