Serrano Valley Hike, March 25, 2023

led by Jeff Bates and Jeff Johnson

We were not sure when we started this Santa Monica Mountains hike whether we would be hitting the peak bloom there or whether we would even be able to do all the stream crossings we were expecting. Regardless, we were determined to set a leisurely pace and just enjoy our green surroundings. We soon found that the stream crossings were manageable and that many plants were in bloom.

Then we came to a sign indicating a new Serrano Valley Loop Trail to the north. How could we not extend our walk to try that? So that was the end of the leisurely pace. We charged up and across the hills and through several more muddy stream crossings. Considering how hard it rained this winter, I was surprised that this steep new trail was in good condition, with no ruts and no washouts. Will it look as good next year?

Once we had looped back to the main trail, we stopped for lunch at a relatively dry spot to sit with a grand view of  the valley in front of us and Boney Ridge to the northeast. Then back to the cars.

Altogether, we walked about 6 miles, so not a strenuous day on the trail but maybe a little more exercise than advertised.
