Kathy’s Plaque in Griffith Park, September 21, 2024

Led by Nancy Beverly and Elaine Eddinger

Kathy Brizzard was a GLS friend and leader years ago and one of the regular GLS Griffith Park Wednesday night hike leaders. After Kathy died in a hiking accident, GLS friends memorialized her in the park with bench at an overlook along the regular Wednesday night hiking route. A memorial plaque was screwed into the bench. Jeff Cuevas was one of the GLSers who did the work to make that happen. Over the years, Kathy’s plaque was vandalized and, recently, pried right off the bench.

This year, GLS had a new, sturdier plaque made to replace the missing one. On September 21, GLS hikers took a hike in the park and attached the new plaque in the original location. Another memorial plaque was also attached to the bench, for Jeff Cuevas, after Jeff died. His plaque was glued on and it was not removed by vandals. So we arrived prepared to glue the new Kathy plaque in place.

Mary Conte and Nancy Beverly said a few words to the group about Kathy and her place in GLS. Mary was Kathy’s partner in Kathy’s GLS days. As the new plaque was glued and clamped, the group headed up the trail into the park, returning a little later to see the plaque in place.

Next time you are in Griffith Park starting up the Mineral Wells Trail, above Spring Canyon, we hope you will stop at the bench.
