Back on the Beach, February 26, 2025

This was the first regular GLS outing of the year after a rough start to 2025, with so many places that we hike further to the north closed now because of the fires. We felt fortunate in Long Beach to be far away and upwind of the fires, this time, at least. Next time, who knows?

It was good just to get out walking with GLS again. A nice group of walkers showed up, about half new to the group and half familiar faces. We took our familiar beach path route from the Belmont Shore Memorial Pier parking lot to the eastern tip of the peninsula, where you can see across the San Gabriel River to Seal Beach, and then back again.

What can I report about this hike? We saw the bright lights at the new restaurant at Rosie’s Dog Beach, now open after dark! We saw the tall sand berm the City has built on the Peninsula beach to prevent flooding — other years, we have seen seawater in the streets out there. We saw some places used for filming familiar TV shows, recently including Dexter and Griselda. And, this time around, we correctly remembered which street to turn onto to get to the bay side beach path.

Come join us the last Wednesday in April, when we will be back here, and when we will not be starting in complete darkness.
