History is interesting, isn’t it? As I looked at the photos in the Queer Lens and the $3 Bill exhibits at the Getty Museum during our GLS trip there August 23, I couldn’t help but reflect upon how far we’ve come as gay folks. Some of the photos went all the way back to the late 1800s! And then when looking at pictures from the AIDS crisis, I remembered clearly how damaged our community was as the government (lookin’ at you President Reagan) did nothing. And then I was filled with gratitude as I saw the photos of pioneers and trailblazers — Virginia Woolf, the Daughters of Bilitis, Harvey Milk, Leonard Matlovich… I could go on and on. Of course I also reflected on the challenging times we’re living in right now with the current administration in Washington and how they are taking away trans rights and don’t want certain books in libraries.

Thank you to the Getty for having these exhibits and to my “fellow travelers” from GLS who “came out” to the museum to witness all of this history.
