Santa Monica and beach communities to the south had marine layer all day on Oct. 26, but our group of eight happy hikers enjoyed sunshine as we climbed up and up the Los Leones trail off Sunset Blvd. near the coast.

The first mile and a half was on a single track — which provided shade and a lot of (invasive?) vines covering the sides of the trail. The rest of the hike involved some somewhat steep climbs on a wide fire road in the warm sun, which gave us ample time and room for in-depth conversations.

Parker Mesa Overlook was our snack break and turn-around point and then it was back to the cars, giving us a good work-out and a total of 7.3 miles round trip.
