Perfect weather in the Verdugos on April 18th, not too hot, not too chilly. We could see for miles and miles from the two relatively unfamiliar viewpoints we visited. Here’s a little story about each of those viewpoints.

On the night of March 13, 2025, when a total lunar eclipse was visible in Los Angeles, Nancy and friends walked up from the Stough Canyon Nature Center into the hills to get a good view of the moon. At one of the first turnoffs from the road, an amateur astronomer had set up a telescope for people to get a good look at the red moon. Nancy noticed that this spot also had a very good view in general. Nancy brought the GLS hikers back there on April 18. (In case you are wondering, the next total lunar eclipse that we will be able to see in Los Angeles will be on June 26, 2029.)

Another time that Nancy was hiking with friends in the Verdugos, the group leader headed down an unfamiliar track. A first, that didn’t seem to be a wise choice, it was rough and the apparent route back up was steep. But soon it led to a nice spot with a picnic table under a shady tree and with a good view. So Nancy made that the snack and turnaround point for the hike on April 18th.

April is the height of the Spring wildflower bloom in the local hills, so here are a few pictures of colorful flora seen on the hike.
