Were you a GLS leader in 2006?

Notes from the past

By Jeff Johnson

Grace’s Message from the GLS Chair in the Jan/Feb 2006 issue of TRACKS (below) congratulated GLS hikers who had recently become hike leaders. I remember many wonderful hikes with the leaders Grace mentioned there. Some of those leaders are still active, some have retired from leading, and some have moved away from southern California. Laura and Karen (bottom of this page) now live in Washington State where they volunteer and hike with the Washington State Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Grace also noted the changing requirements in 2006 for maintaining Sierra Club leadership credentials. Twenty years later, Sierra Club leadership requirements are changing more. The changes today are mostly coming from the national Sierra Club outings organization, rather than the Angeles Chapter, responding to greater concerns about safety and liability. If you have been on a GLS hike recently, you may have noticed some changes or heard about them. You can read our Outings Chair Nancy Beverly’s message to GLS leaders on this subject here.
